Otomo no Sadehiko Leaving Sayohime to Invade Korea, 1879 - Interesting scene depicting the warrior Otomo no Sadehiko leaving his wife as he prepares leave to invade Korea. He stands on the shore under a glowing red sun surrounded by a halo of yellow light, looking up with his eyes closed, sails dotting the water behind him. His wife, Sayohime, kneels at his side, weeping with sorrow, dabbing at her face with the sleeve of her robe. His retainers are gathered around with heads solemnly bowed. According to legend, Sayohime climbed to the top of Mt. Kagamiyama to watch the fleet depart, waiting and praying for her husband's safe return. She cried and cried, staying so long that she turned to stone. Detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the white pants and white kimono. A poignant subject.
