Comments - Interesting kabuki illustration of the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen." The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan has joined the household of the retired Taira general Yoshioka Kiichi, disguised as the servant Torazo in an attempt to obtain Kiichi's secret books of military strategy. Torazo kneels at left, looking up with an uncomfortable frown as he pushes up his sleeve. Kiichi's daughter Minazuru, who has fallen in love with Torazo, stands beside him, looking down with a smile. Large chrysanthemums bloom behind a bamboo garden fence in the background, some blossoms supported by paper collars. A handsome design, nicely detailed.
