Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Saigo Takamori Receiving a Messenger, 1877

Comments - Interesting image from the Satsuma Rebellion of the rebel leader Saigo Takamori receiving a messenger. He stands in the center with his chin tilted defiantly upwards as the young rebel kneels before him, bringing news of the battle. Fighting takes place on the hill just beyond the pine tree at left, with rebel samurai charging up a hillside while Japanese troops fire down upon them. At right, Saigo's mistress looks over a stack of papers, biting anxiously on a handkerchief, surrounded by strange purple fruits that look somewhat like pineapples. A screen behind her features a tiger atop a rocky cliff, and a mournful-looking dog sits at Saigo's feet. A fascinating illustration, handsomely detailed.
