Comments - Dramatic illustration of the Korean uprising of July 23, 1882, also known as the Imo Incident or the Korea Incident. Korean soldiers revolted, attacking the palace and government officials, along with the Japanese legation and military advisors. The crowd destroyed buildings, killed many government officials, and occupied Changdeok Palace. The Japanese minister to Korea, Hanabusa Yoshitada, and his staff were forced to flee the rioting mob in a small boat, and were rescued by the British ship "Flying Fish." Chikanobu did several triptychs depicting the heroic Japanese bravely fighting off their attackers or making their escape by boat, but we have never seen this subject before. This design includes an inset map of the coast of Korea and a dusting of mica across the top of the night sky. An interesting contemporary depiction of this historic event.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, partially backed with paper. Slight thinning at corners, a couple holes, repaired. Creasing, slight soiling, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details.
