Otani Tomoemon IV as Adachi Motoemon and Arashi Rikan III as Hayase Iori, 1854

Comments - Dramatic, graphic scene from the play commonly known as "Tengajaya Revenge" of Adachi Motoemon murdering Hayase Iori. After the samurai Toma Saburoemon killed his father, Iori vowed to avenge his death, but through an unfortunate series of events, he ended up impoverished and unable to walk, living in a hut outside the village of Tengajaya. When Saburoemon came across him one day, he decided to have his henchmen, the Adachi brothers, finish him off for good. Here, the helpless Iori throws his hand out in a stopping motion as Adachi Motoemon holds his sword to his chest, his victim already covered in blood. The gruesome nature of the scene is intensified by the use of lacquer on some of the blood, giving it a wet, shiny appearance. Also detailed with fine embossing on the white kimono.
