Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of the Priest Nichiren calming a storm by reciting Buddhist sutras as he is being taken to Sado Island for exile. Enormous waves threaten to swamp the ship as the priest stands in the prow with his prayer beads in hand, the wind whipping his robes about him. His companions react with alarm as a dragon emerges from the sea at upper left and lightning flashes across the sky. Nakamura Fukusuke appears as Nichiren. Includes a dusting of mica across the waves. The red pigment used on the lightning has oxidized to a dark tone. A terrific, bold image, beautifully composed and shaded.
