From an untitled triptych series of the Six Jewel Rivers

The Chofu Jewel River in Musashi Province, 1847 - 1848 - Attractive triptych depicting women washing cloth in the Chofu River in Musashi Province, one of the famed Six Jewel Rivers. At left, a beauty steps up and down on white fabric in the running water. In the center, a woman with a towel wrapped around her hair tends a large tub full of cloth, the young girl beside her holding a wooden mallet to beat the fabric. An elegant beauty strolls past the workers at right, holding a pipe and carrying a walking stick. Lengths of cloth are stretched out on the shore to dry in the sun, and other women are busy in the background fulling cloth and carrying a tub of laundry. A great view of this traditional women's duty, set into a handsome landscape with the water winding through the scene.
