by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the "Hippo Denju" scene from the play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." The court calligrapher Sugawara no Michizane has summoned his former student, Takebe Genzo, to make him the heir to his secrets of the art of calligraphy. Sugawara sits on a platform at right, holding the book of his secrets wrapped in cloth. He watches as Genzo sits at a low desk with a sheet of blank paper before him and a page of calligraphy as he mixes ink on a stone, folded tissues in his mouth. He must demonstrate that he is worthy of Kan Shojo's secrets, so he readies himself to create an example of his work. From left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V and Ichimura Uzaemon XII. A handsome illustration from this popular drama.
