by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Comments - Handsome triptych depicting the Meiji Emperor, Empress, and the young Prince watching turtles from a palace verandah. At right, the boy smiles happily as he watches a turtle swimming below while two other perch on a nearby rock, their shells trailing long strands of moss. In the center, the Empress smiles fondly as she looks down, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting. The railings of the verandah are decorated with a colorful pattern, and Mt. Fuji can be seen in the distance at left beyond flying cranes. Detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and trim. A charming design.
