Rain and Thunder around Hashidate

From an untitled series of views of Japan

Kuniyoshi's untitled series of views of Japan - Kuniyoshi designed this attractive series of views of Japan around 1840, but it was not published until after his death. In the early 20th century, the publisher Wakita in Osaka published a series of eight landscapes of Kuniyoshi's original designs. Consequently, there are no lifetime prints from this series. Although Kuniyoshi is best known for his warrior prints, he created striking landscapes as well, and these are fine examples of his work in this genre. Beautifully colored and composed, these great images are a wonderful choice to collect or display.

Rain and Thunder around Hashidate - Dramatic image of a thunderstorm at Hashidate, with jagged bolts of red and orange lightning streaking across the dark sky. A pine tree frames an expansive view of the Bay of Miayazu and the famous "ama no hashidate," a long, narrow spit of land covered in pine trees. A few white sails are visible in the distance, with low mountains in gray along the horizon. A great design with attractive color and fine shading.
