Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Folding Fan, 1865 (Suehiro goju-san tsugi)

The Fifty-three Stations of the Folding Fan - Handsome image from a collaborative series depicting the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido done to commemorate the journey of the Shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863. Several artists created designs for the series, including Yoshitoshi and Hiroshige II. The series features a title cartouche in the shape of a folding fan, and is commonly known as the "Fan Tokaido." Scenes depict the Shogun's procession along the road, crossing mountains and plains, fording rivers and taking ferries. A nicely detailed, rarely seen series.

Hodogaya - Terrific illustration of foreigners watching the shogun's procession as it passes through Hodogaya, just a few miles from Yokohama. A man wearing a black hat with a feather peers at the samurai through a telescope, while the woman in front of him gestures with her hand. She wears a dress with a full hoop skirt, a V-shaped bodice, and striped sleeves, and a hat topped with roses. A bearded gentleman beside her grins rather sinisterly and waves his hands, wearing a black button front jacket and a top hat. A fantastic Yokohama-e image combining a traditional Japanese subject with newly arrived foreign visitors.
