A True Picture of the Opening of the Season at Ryogoku Bridge in Edo during the Bunka Era, 1889 - Terrific Utamaro triptych of pleasures boats on the Sumida River at Ryogoku viewing the first fireworks of the season. At right a young geisha stands as a boatman poles the craft along, steadying herself on her companion's arm. At left, a woman dips a red lacquer sake cup into the gently rippling water while another woman sits back, relaxing against the upright support of the roof, a fan in hand. The bridge is crowded with people enjoying the cool summer evening, watching the sparks shooting up from a handheld firework below. This 1889 Meiji triptych updates the softer colors of Utamaro's original to the more vibrant tones popular during the Meiji era. A wonderful design with lovely detail, including delicate embossing in the white kimono collars. Published by Okura Magobei.
