The Ninth Month (Kikuzuki): Bando Takesaburo I as Ushiwaka and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Minazuru-hime, 1854 - Handsome scene of the young Ushiwaka standing behind the Princess Minazuru. He scowls as he looks back over his shoulder, and elegant black lacquer box tied with a red cord in his hand. The beauty smiles happily, tossing one of her flowing sleeves over her arm. Her kimono is softly shaded from blue to white to rose and patterned with cherry blossoms. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with ribbons and a large cluster of blue and white flowers. A checked shade shelters a bed of fine chrysanthemums, the heavy blossoms supported with paper collars. The festival for the ninth month is the Chrysanthemum Festival. A charming design, detailed with embossing on the white kimono trim. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
