The Wisteria Maiden, 1959

Comments - Lovely shin-hanga portrait of the Wisteria Maiden, one of the classic Otsu-e figures. Otsu-e were traditional folk paintings sold to travelers during the Edo era in Otsu on Lake Biwa near Kyoto. The beauty wears a black lacquer hat for traveling, and a red orange kimono with a bold floral pattern. A few leaves and wisteria blossoms fill the background. The design is printed to appear as an actual painting, with rough edges and brush strokes on some of the forms. Beautifully detailed with shimmering silver mica on the underside of the hat. A rare design by this noted shin-hanga artist.
