Kanaomaru Masatoshi Reports to Tokiwa Gozen and Her Children, 1843 - 1847

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the samurai Kanaomaru Masatoshi reporting to Tokiwa gozen, the wife of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, and her children. He kneels at left, frowning angrily as he throws out his hands. He wears a suit of armor, and his battle helmet rests on the floor nearby. A young woman cradles Lady Tokiwa's youngest son in her lap, smiling sweetly, while the eldest boy stands beside her. At right, Lady Tokiwa leans forward anxiously, while her middle boy reacts with alarm as he looks over her shoulder. A cloth panel hangs behind them, with a black lacquer box holding two handles upright. A brazier with glowing red coals and a box of additional charcoal rest on the floor at bottom center. An interesting design, nicely detailed with embossing in the matron's white kimono trim and the white areas of her kimono.
