Nobleman with a Red Wig, 1877

Comments - Striking kabuki scene of nobleman gripping a sword upright as he threatens a seated samurai. He wears a flowing red wig over an elegant black robe patterned with a burnished geometric design that repeats the colored motifs. At left, the warrior leans forward aggressively as he frowns back his companion. He is dressed in a finely dotted gray kamishimo over a black kimono with a burnished geometric pattern, his hair pulled back into a slender topknot. At right, an inset in the shape of a battledore features a beauty smiling eagerly as she looks over her shoulder. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Iwai Hanshiro. A nicely detailed triptych with vibrant color, additional burnishing on the woman's black robe and the simulated black lacquer frame, and embossing on the white kimono trim and the white stripes of the wig.
