Ueno by Gekko (1859 - 1920)

Original Gekko (1859 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ueno

Series; One Hundred Moonlit Views

Ueno - Lovely view of a beauty tying a poem slip to the branch of a cherry tree at Ueno Park. She wears a colorful blue kimono over a red and white under robe, her head wrapped in a red-orange scarf. A mat is spread out on the grass nearby, with a lacquer bento box and ink stone, and the edge of a stone wall extends into the scene at lower left. The graceful branches are covered with delicate pink and white blossoms and buds, set against a softly shaded blue sky. The expensive red pigment used on the beauty's hood and the title cartouche has oxidized to a dark tone. A beautiful spring subject from this rarely seen Gekko series.
