November Play at the Kabukiza: Hinata Shima, 1893

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as the former warrior Kagekiyo holding the hands of his young daughter as they are reunited. Now blind, he leans forward as he takes her small hands in his, overcome with emotion. His robes are tattered and his hair is long and unkempt, and he uses a rustic branch as a walking stick. The girl had made a pilgrimage to find her father, who had had been reduced to poverty and was living in a hut in Hyuga. Undulating waves run across the background, providing a simple yet effective setting for this poignant scene. A great design by Kunichika.
