A Beauty in the Morning Mist

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Wonderful portrait of a young beauty waking in the early morning after a long night of entertaining. This classic Eisen portrait shows the young girl under a heavy plaid quilt, looking a bit disheveled after a late evening. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with a few hairpins, including a metal one decorated with a tiny cuckoo flying past a crescent moon. Beautiful color and detail in this charming image.
