Otsu: Spring Flood Water at Afusakayama, 1855 - Handsome portrait by Toyokuni III of a nobleman in formal dress, looking over his shoulder with a scowl as he extends his hand in an unusual gesture. He wears a long black robe with a subtle burnished scroll pattern over full gray print pants and an embossed white kimono. The beautiful winter landscape above by Hiroshige shows snow blanketing Mt. Afusaka near Otsu, with the village nestled in a valley at far right. A river carrying the spring melt from the mountain runs diagonally across the lower right corner of the scene, repeating the clear blue of the sky. A nice print from the series.
