Rooster: Defense of a Castle, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a performance at the Nakamuraza or Nakamura Theater of the warrior Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) defending a castle, shown sitting on a folding stool looking out a window above a stone foundation. Below, another samurai in full armor scowls up at him, a spear in hand, while a third samurai frowns at him as he holds out a sword wrapped in cloth. The actors include Kataoka Nizaemon as Masakiyo and Seki Sanjuro. Nicely detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 9" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small hole and thinning spot, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and slight rubbing at edges, small indent. Please see photos for details.
