Ichikawa Danjuro as Sekibei

Comments - Bold kabuki portrait from the play "The Snow Bound Barrier of Love" featuring Ichikawa Danjuro as the barrier guard Sekibei, who attempts to chop down a cherry tree while drunk. Just as he is about the strike, the spirit of the cherry tree appears in the form of the lovely courtesan Sumizome to do battle with him. Here, he gestures at the tree with an angry frown, waring a rust colored vest over a green kimono, and a cloth cap. A signpost frames the scene at right with blossoming cherry branches overhead. A striking design focusing on just a single figure rather than several members of the cast. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black obi and kimono trim.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/8" + margins as shown
