Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Readying Children for a Performance

Comments - Intriguing scene of beauties helping young children prepare for a dance or drama performance. At right, a woman kneels next to a makeup chest with a brush in her hand as the little girl beside her holds up an elegantly styled wig. At left, a beauty helps dress a boy in a nobleman's costume. The girl beside them wears a Heian era court outfit of a white kimono tucked into trailing red pants, and the "moth's wing" eyebrows popular at the time. In the center, a stagehand dressed in black claps two wooden blocks together. A charming design with wonderful detail.
