47 Ronin, Act 1: Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine: The Helmet Inspection, 1806 - Fantastic scene from Act 1 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura," where Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan, arrives at Tsurugaoka Hachiman to identify the helmet of a fallen samurai. Here, Lord Moronao makes unwanted advances towards Lady Kaoyo, trying to hand her a love letter. She looks down at him disdainfully, but he kneels on the hem of her kimono, preventing her from leaving. Lord Wakasanosuke frowns behind the tree at left, ready to intercede to protect the beauty's reputation. A great design from a rare 1806 Chushingura series by Hokusai, beautifully detailed.
