Eawase: Priest Seigen, Chapter 17, 1864 - Terrific illustration of the famous tale of the depraved priest Seigen, whose desire for the beautiful Princess Sakura ends in tragedy. Reduced to living in poverty after being thrown out of his temple, he kneels beside a smoking fire of pine branches, holding a string of prayer beads as he stares at a portrait of the lovely princess. His gray robe slips from his withered frame, his ribs showing, his hair unkempt and growing out. His hut is shabby with cracked plaster and tears in the screen behind him. An interesting portrait from this classic kabuki play, finely drawn and nicely detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
