The Tenth Month: Wealthy Merchants Celebrating Ebisu, 1889 - Lively triptych by Chikanobu illustrating the wild activities of wealthy merchants celebrating Ebisu, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Fortune, at a teahouse in Edo. Courtesans are shown along the upper balcony entertaining guests. At upper right, the silhouette of a dancer can be seen against the shoji panels lining the verandah. At top center, young boys serve tea to seated dignitaries and lords while a sumo can be seen drinking sake from enormous red lacquer cup. Below on ground level, two courtesans are shown welcoming men to the teahouse, while a group of celebrants dance before a statue of Ebisu, offering a large fish and mochi cakes to the god. A fantastic, vibrant scene filled with the energy of this annual celebration.
