Lady Sei Shonagon, 1896 - Lovely portrait of the tenth-century poet Lady Sei Shonagon, famous for authoring "The Pillow Book," a collection of poems and observations about her years in court serving the Empress Teishi. She is shown here while traveling, wearing a wide-brimmed hat with a delicately embossed veil hanging from it. She lifts her hat with one hand as she peers out, the road around her bustling with pedestrians and a royal carriage at left. Beautiful handling of the sheer veil, through which her colorful floral print kimono can be seen. Detailed with a subtle burnished star pattern on the crown of the hat and burnishing on the black hair. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection. An exquisitely printed image with a bold composition.
