Comments - Terrific double portrait from the kabuki play "Kokusen'ya Gassen," set mainly in China. The warrior Watonai traveled to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty, seeking the help of his half-sister's husband, General Kanki. The scene shows an angry confrontation between Watonai and the bearded Kanki, who initially refuses to join forces with him. The samurai grimaces angrily, a sword in his hand. The general strokes his beard with a worried, frightened expression, wearing an exotic robe with ruffled trim and a white fur collar, his hair pulled back into a knot fastened with a coral hairpin. A great expressive image with fine detailing in the hairstyles.
