by Sadahide (1807 - 1873)
Comments - Dramatic scene from the life of the eleventh-century daimyo Abe no Sadato, who was head of the Abe clan and fought against the Minamoto for nine years for control of Mutsu Province. In the center, Sadato battles warriors during a surprise attack on his encampment, using his sword to block a blow from a spear as he stands with one foot atop a fallen enemy. At lower left, another samurai emerges from beneath a cloth curtain surrounding the camp, while on a dappled horse above, Minamoto no Yoshiie (Hachimantaro) directs his troops with a tasseled command baton. A driving rain slants across the scene and jagged bolts of lightning zigzag across the sky. A great action scene with terrific detail.
