Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami" featuring from left Ichikawa Ebizo V as the otokodate Danshichi Kurobei and Kataoka Ichizo I as Giheiji. In the play, Danshichi gets into an argument with Giheiji, his father-in-law, and ends up murdering him. Here, the elderly man grabs at his son-in-law's kimono as climbs out of a mud puddle, an enraged expression on his face. Danshichi leans forward holding the blade of his sword between his hands as he contemplates killing Giheji, knowing full well that the crime he is about to commit is punishable by death. His kimono is pushed down to the waist, revealing his full body tattoo with an image of the wild boy Kintaro on his back and an octopus on his thigh. A border of clouds separates the figures from the parade floats of the Summer Festival. A fantastic image from this famous play.
