Gathering inside a Shop, 1858

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a gathering inside a shop, with the beauty Chiyo at left smiling as she plays the shamisen. The man kneeling beside her grins as he takes a toothpick from his mouth, while a village clerk leans over an open book spread out on a low stand before him. At right, an elderly man with glasses looks distraught as he reads, while a commoner behind him grimaces as he rests his chin on his hands while examining a book on the floor. An intriguing group of expressive figures.
