Beauties in a Peony Garden, 1879

Comments - Attractive scene of upper-class beauties enjoying an outing in a peony garden. In the center, a princess sits on a bench covered with a floral cloth, smiling as she looks over her shoulder at a young woman at left. The young woman wears a red kimono with a cherry blossom pattern over a light blue under robe. Ladies-in-waiting surround them, each wearing an elegant outer robe over a white kimono tucked into red pants. Blossoming peonies fill the garden behind them, alongside a pond with a stone bridge over it. A charming design, beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono trim, burnishing on the black kimono, and touches of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone. The first time we've offered this subject.
