Eastern Genji: The Garden in Snow, 1854

Comments - Terrific scene from the "Tale of Genji" of beauties building a giant snow rabbit in the garden. The beauty at bottom center uses a trowel and a red lacquer sake cup as she works, her sleeves tied back with a red sash. The woman at left uses a wooden tool to smooth the ear, while their young companion at right blows on her hands to warm her fingers. A waterfall flows into a pond, and a snow-covered pagoda can be seen in the distance. A lovely image, beautifully colored and detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and trim and along the edges of the rabbit.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 10" + margins as shown
