Urazato and Tokijiro: That Licensed Quarter Dream of a Night Crow, 1860

Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych of the lovers Tokijiro and the courtesan Urazato making their way through the street during a fire at night. The beauty smiles fondly up at her sweetheart as they holds hands, Tokijiro grinning as he watches the embers flying across the sky. He has a quilted fireman's jacket depicting a wolf draped over her shoulders. The fireman at left frowns with concern as he holds his sleeve up to his face, his robe featuring a striking design of a dragon, flames and swirling clouds. Figures in dark silhouette can be seen rushing through the darkness to safety in the background. The left panel is by Yoshitsuya, while the two right panels are by Toyokuni III. A terrific, bold image with large figures, intricate detailing in the quilting, and a spattering of hand-applied pigment to indicate the embers. A great design.
