Comments - Fantastic scene of the heated Battle of Awazu between Minamoto factions led by Yoshitsune and Noriyori against Yoshinaka, who made his final stand at Awazu. In the center, the famous woman warrior Tomoe gozen easily lifts an opponent above her head as her dappled horse rears. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder, her long hair flowing over her shoulder and her vest fluttering in the breeze. At right, a samurai charges ahead on a brown horse, grimacing angrily and wearing a battle helmet topped with antlers. A cape patterned with his family crest billows over his shoulders. The fighting continues all around with men on horseback and on foot. The plains of Awazu stretch out into the distance behind the battle, with sails dotting the ocean beyond. A great scene filled with energy and action, and a rare portrait of this noted female warrior.
