Series; Illustrated Tale of the Soga Brothers, circa 1845

Illustrated Tale of the Soga Brothers (Soga Monogatari Zue) - This handsome historic series by Hiroshige illustrates the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, Soga Juro Sukenari and Soga Goro Tokimune. A true story, the Soga Brothers' father was murdered in 1175 when the brothers were aged three and five. As young samurai, they finally avenged his death in 1193, killing his murderer during a hunting party at the foot of Mt. Fuji. This timeless story of honor and fidelity was a favorite subject for artists during the Edo era. These terrific designs combine lively figures with handsome settings, including interiors and landscapes. A rarely seen Hiroshige series and a nice complement to his landscape series.
