Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Kumagai Naozane, 1852

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Jiro Naozane galloping along the shore as he chases the young Taira samurai Tayu Atsumori at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. The agitated veteran grimaces with as he waves his fan above his head, a fleet of ships on the horizon in the distance. A bold composition, beautifully detailed and colored, with soft shading in the water and sky. A great design.
