Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych illustrating a scene from the play "Jiraiya goketsu monogatari." At left, the archer Takasago Yuminosuke wears a wolf skin over his armor, frowning as he clutches his bow with both hands. The glowing yellow eyes and snarling mouth of the animal give the warrior a fearsome appearance. In the center, Ichikawa Danjuro portrays the magician Jiraiya, wearing an impressive vest with a long-tailed bird on the shoulders over a dragon print robe and armor. He stares ahead glumly as he reaches for his sword. At right, Yasha Goro draws his blade from its scabbard, glaring angrily at Yuminosuke. A great atmospheric setting with only a few pine trees visible in silhouette against the dark night sky. Beautifully detailed with a dusting of mica over the wolf skin, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the kimono at right. A great Kunichika design.
