Priest Seigen, Boatman, and Princess Sakura, 1858

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of the depraved priest Seigen, whose love for Princess Sakura leads to tragedy. Here, Seigen looks up at the boatman Ushiwaka Denji with a distraught expression, pleading with him as he poles the boat away from the shore. The faint blue shading around Seigen's eyes indicates that he is either a ghost or is dying. At right, Princess Sakura smiles as she peers from around her upraised sleeve, standing beside a marker beneath a willow tree. The actors include Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Seigen and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Ushiwaka Denji. Nice expressive figures with an interesting setting.
