Waterfowl at the Battle of Fujikawa

Comments - Fantastic scene from the Battle of Fujikawa showing Minamoto troops along the shore of the Fujikawa River. The story goes that the Minamoto and Taira armies camped alongside the Fujikawa on the night before the battle. The birds along the river made such a commotion that the Taira troops fled, fearing a surprise attack by a much larger force. Wearing hunting dress, Minamoto no Yoritomo sits on a dappled horse at center, surrounded by his retainers and allies. The base of Mt. Fuji fills the background, rising high above the river, orange smoke rising into the night sky from the bonfires on the opposite shore. Hundreds of wild geese take to the air, the men below watching the sight. Tasseled standards and banners wave in the air along both banks above cloth encampment walls. An outstanding depiction of this legendary event, beautifully detailed and colored.
