Arguing over a Banner, 1882

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a group gathered in the woods, arguing over a white banner that bears the black diamond crest of the Takeda clan. At right, a wild-haired warrior grimaces fiercely as he draws his sword. In the center, a beauty holds up one end of the scroll while a seated samurai grasps the other end draped over his shoulder. The three men at left eye each other warily. The left panel features Ichikawa Danjuro as the hunter Tsuneemon and Onoe Kikugoro as the hunter Zenzo. The center panel includes Arashi Rikan, Suketakaya Takesuke as Katsuyori, and Nakamura Shikan as Oni Masakage. The right panel shows Ichikawa Ebizo and Ichikawa Udanji. Nice large expressive figures with fine detail in the hair and lively color.

Artist - Kunimatsu (1855 - 1944)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, faint vertical line where backing papers meet, slight glue residue at upper left of right panel. Please see photos for details.
