Minamoto no Raiko and His Men in the Lair of Shuten-doji, 1876 - Fantastic scene of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men at the mountain lair of the terrible demon, Shuten-doji. Disguised as traveling monks, Raiko and his retainers traveled to the monster's hideout to rescue the young beauties he had kidnapped. They are shown here enjoying a banquet, plying Shuten-doji with sake to put him into a drunken stupor. The demon sits at right, resting sleepily against an armrest and holding an enormous cup filled with sake, as one of Raiko's men performs a dance to entertain him. A terrific subject from this great legend, nicely detailed.
