Scene from Kujira Obi Nishiki no Shingata, 1867

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Kujira Obi Nishiki no Shingata." Here, the evil Adachi Motoemon has shown up at home of his brother, Adachi Yasuke, intent on killing him and stealing his money. Motoemon raises a large knife above his head as he attacks his brother in his bed. Yasuke scrambles backwards on the floor, bleeding from a wound to his neck and throwing his hand out in self-defense. At left, the samurai Hayase Iori has just arrived to see Yasuke, who serves his family. Iori waits at the door with a suspicious expression as he listens, a lantern in hand. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho II, Nakamura Shikan IV as Adachi Yasuke, and Otani Tomoemon V as Adachi Motoemon. A great early Yoshitoshi design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
