Wary Matron, Samurai, and Courtesan, 1889

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a samurai visiting a courtesan, frowning and looking suspiciously at her out of the corners of his eyes, one hand held up to his ear. The beauty smiles back at him as she stands with one hand on the window frame, a roll of tissues in her other hand. A kimono is draped over a stand in the center room, and a red lacquer box rests on a shelf above sliding panels patterned with blossoms. At left, a matron looks warily up at the night sky, cherry blossoms framing a view of the water beyond. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Onoe Kikugoro, and Nakamura Fukusuke. An interesting design a nicely detailed setting. Includes a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono, and burnishing on the kimono stand and the courtesan's black coat collar.
