Sakanoue no Korenori, Poet No. 31 - Fantastic scene depicting the famous warrior Sato no Tadanobu, a loyal retainer of Yoshitsune. After a former mistress betrayed his hiding place, he used a go board to fight off more than 200 policemen attacking him. He is shown here with his foot atop the overturned go board, playing pieces scattered all over the floor around him, holding his sword. His treacherous mistress cowers behind a sliding screen at right. An incredible illustration from this legendary tale, with a dramatic figure and fine detail. Go board prints are highly collectible, and this woodblock illustrates one of the most famous tales involving a go board. The verse by poet Sakanoue no Korenori reads:

At the break of day,
Just as though the morning moon
Lightened the dim scene,
Yoshino's village lay
In a haze of falling snow.

A great subject for a collector.
