Famous Places in Tokyo - Takanawa: Complete View of the Steam Train and Railroad, 1871 by Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Famous Places in Tokyo - Takanawa: Complete View of the Steam Train and Railroad, 1871

Comments - Terrific Yoshitoshi triptych depicting the steam train and railroad from Shimbashi in Tokyo to Yokohama. The first railroad in Japan, this line opened in 1872, so Yoshitoshi's design actually predates the completion of the line, and may be based on Western illustrations. The train chugs around the curving track, gray smoke flowing from the stack on the steam engine, which is crowded with foreign passengers. Elegantly dressed Westerners stand on either side of the track, including a woman in a full skirt and a bonnet adorned with flowers and feathers, and men wearing top hats. A crowd has gathered on the bride at left, and the roadway and hilltop, including traditionally dressed Japanese and foreigners. An intriguing image in a very unusual style for Yoshitoshi, with wonderful color and detail. A fantastic and rare triptych, and a great choice for a Yoshitoshi collector or railroad enthusiast.
