Lineage of Great Japan, 1881 by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lineage of Great Japan, 1881

Comments - Terrific group portrait showing the Japanese royal family and the imperial lineage. The Meiji Emperor sits on an ornately carved upholstered chair at center left, wearing a military dress uniform and feathered hat. His wife stands below him, looking demurely to the side, wearing a floral kimono over red hakama pants and holding a folding fan. The legendary first emperor, Jimmu sits at top center, gripping a rustic bow and clutching a handful of arrows, to reinforce the lineage of the current emperor. The central figures are flanked by noblemen and beauties in formal court dress, along with a few children and men in military uniforms. A fascinating image with wonderful detail in the figures and lively color, including burnishing on the black uniforms.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
