Customs and Manners of Women in Old Japan, 1892 by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Customs and Manners of Women in Old Japan, 1892

Comments - Charming triptych of a group of elegantly dressed young ladies enjoying a variety of leisure activities, including viewing scrolls and writing. A beauty at left retrieves a bundle of scrolls from an elegant lacquer stand, the young girl next to her carrying a stack of books. At right, an attendant presents a tray of paper to a kneeling woman, another tray with a brush and ink stone ready for writing. In the center, a woman uses a slender pole to help hang a scroll with a painting on it, a lovely floral display on the floor nearby. A wonderful scene with beautiful color and detail, including burnishing on the black lacquer shelves and the frame of the screen, along with delicate cloth embossing on the background.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small wormhole, repaired. Creasing and wrinkling, slight toning and soiling, a few marks. Please see photos for details.
