Series; Barometer of Emotions, 1876 - 1877

Storm: Nakamura Shikan III as Watanabe no Tsuna, 1876 - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan III as the legendary samurai Watanabe no Tsuna from a rarely seen Yoshitoshi series. A loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko), Watanabe was one of Yorimitsu's trusted "Shitenno" or "Four Guardian Kings." Here, he grips a signpost with both hands outside a temple, frowning angrily. He wears a purple kimono patterned with medallions bordered with swirling clouds tucked into a green and white dotted kamishimo over a fine suit of armor. A terrific bold design, beautifully color and detailed with burnishing on the armor, fine line work on the hair, and bokashi shading in the night sky. Only the second time we've seen this great Yoshitoshi design.
