Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki drama about the last days of the otokodate or street knight Banzuiin Chobei. His enemy, the samurai Jurozaemon, attacked him while he was at a bathhouse and without his weapons. At right, Jurozaemon lunges at Chobei with his spear, while another attacker at left raises a sword above his head. With an angry grimace, Chobei pushes away the handle of the spear while waving the handle of a water dipper as a makeshift weapon. His wet hang falls over his shoulders and he wears only a simple cotton kimono. Clouds of steam rise from the bath at right. A great image, detailed with a subtle burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono.
